What is your favorite part of playing roller derby?
As cliché as it sounds, it’s the empowerment that you feel doing this sport, and the camaraderie. I also love that it’s a sport that really celebrates women and men of all shapes & sizes and there isn’t a standard athlete mold. It just felt right, like I found my “thing” the first day.
List any previous athletic or club experience.
I started my derby career in the UK, where I moved around a bit, skating with Severn Roller Torrent, Spa Town Rollergirls & the Wakey Wheeled Cats. Before that, I played field Hockey in high school and took figure skating lessons growing up and as an adult. I spent 8 years in the Army so mandatory physical training and testing is something I’m used to (but still get very nervous!).
What do you do when you are not skating?
I spend most of my time in the car balancing a crappy work commute and going to derby. I work as an HR Manager and try to pass myself off as a functional Mom and wife. I also love music and seeing live music.
Your most memorable derby moment?
I’ve helped many skaters achieve their 25 in 5, and eventually 27 in 5, by pacing them. There is no better feeling for me than to see someone else realize what they are capable of and that moment they feel that sense of accomplishment.
